The fast-changing world of drones

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are at the forefront of a technological revolution, with a wide range of applications in civilian and military life. Artificial Intelligence can enhance their autonomy, intelligence and decision-making capabilities, enabling them to carry out complex tasks with efficiency and accuracy. In operations as varied as crop spraying, fast-food deliveries, and urban warfare, drones are rapidly changing how we do what we do.

In his talk for Engaging Issues Alex will describe drones, their development, capabilities and applications. He will also consider what new possibilities the future development and applications of drones may bring about, and the ethical issues arising from the current and future status of drones.

Alex Stancu

Professor Alexandru Stancu is an internationally recognised expert with over 25 years of experience in drone and robotics, AI and autonomous vehicle technologies. His pioneering research has created industrial impact, and high-profile deployments in various defence and civilian sectors.

Alex is CEO and founder of Manchester Robotics Ltd., has led the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Research Group at the University of Manchester, and has recently joined Hereford-based NMITE (New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering) as Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Academic Lead for Autonomous Robotics and Drones. His robotics and AI curricula are used in several universities in the UK and worldwide, and he has a strong track record of educational innovation.
